Aries in Third House::Sahaj Bhava in Vedic Astrology

Continuing form the previous post in which we discussed what effects are produced when Mesha Rasi or Aries occupies the Second House or Dhana Bhava in Vedic Astrology, in this post we will discuss what are the effects when Aries lords the Third house.

The Third House is also known as Sahaj Bhava and  represents siblings, efforts, courage, short journeys, loss of mother, wife’s fortune, elder brother’s children and one’s longevity and vitality. It also represents the throat, neck, arms and right ear from the physical perspective. Houses are also known as Bhavas in jyotisha.Bhava means feeling and in short it represents what kind of feelings the native will have towards a particualr area of life denoted by the particular house of bhava. Since the eight bhava is responsible for the longevity and vitality of the native, the 3rd house being the 8th to the 8th house , also denotes the longevity and thus directly influences the vitality of the native.

When Aries or Mesha Rashi occupies the third house/sahaj bhava , the natives 3rd house affairs will don the qualites of Mars , as Mangal is the ruler of Aries. The native will hot and harsh in temperament , be courageous, fiery and will always undertake short journeys and be on the move. The native’s younger brothers will be be very wealthy or extremely poor depending on the avastha of Mars in the horoscope. The native will not suffer from manglik dosha as Mars is not related to the 7th house of marriage. The native’s wife will find fortune in foreign lands and the brothers will also benefit from east direction. For Aquarius ascendant , Mars is lord of 3rd house and Since lagna lord Saturn does not like Mars , the native will not be particularly affectionate towards his younger siblings.Since the sahaj bhava is also the 6th from the 10th house of profession , the native will have high zeal and will be very proactive in removing obstacles and fighting enemies for advancement in career. The 3rd house is also an upchaya for the 10th house and an auspicious influence on the 3rd house denotes constant improvement in career.

Since Aries is a movable sign , and the 3rd house is the 11th from the 5th house , the native will gain by chanting short and high energy mantras. The updaesha from the guru may be recieved in a foreign land. Since Aries is a prishtodaya rasi , experiences related to third house will manifest late in life.

These qualities and attributes of Aries lording the third house may get modified , it planets join or aspect Mars or occupy / aspect the third house.

The next post will describe the effects when Aries lords the fourth house or bhava.

Aries in Second House::Dhana Bhava in Vedic Astrology

Continuing form the previous post in which we discussed what effects are produced when Mesha Rasi or Aries occupies the Ascendant or Rising Sign or also known as Lagna in Vedic Astrology, in this post we will discuss what are the effects when Aries lords the Second house or Dhana Bhava.

The Second House is also known as Dhava Bhava and  represents finances, bank balances, gold and precious metals, gemstones, family, longevity of wife, speech, food, clothes and death of native. It also represents the face and right eye from the physical perspective. Houses are also known as Bhavas in jyotisha.Bhava means feeling and in short it represents what kind of feelings the native will have towards a particualr area of life denoted by the particular house of bhava. Since the third bhava is responsible for the longevity and vitality of the native, the 2nd house being the 12th to the 3rd house , denotes the loss of longevity and thus directly influences the death of the native.

When Aries or Mesha Rashi occupies the second house/dhana bhava , the natives 2nd house affairs will don the qualites of Mars , as Mangal is the ruler of Aries. The native will like hot and spicy food , be harsh in speech, either be very wealthy or extremely poor depending on the avastha of Mars in the horoscope. The native will also suffer from very mild manglik dosha if mars occupies his own rasi in second house , since 2nd house is eight from 7th house and directly controls the longevity of wife and married life. For Aries ascendant , Mars itself is 8th lord and for Libra Ascendant , Mars is 7th lord of marriage and wife.

Since Aries is a movable sign , the native will be a foodie and preferably fond of cooking himself and will also be a quick eater. The native may get good wealth from east direction as Aries now occupies second house. Since Aries is a prishtodaya rasi , experiences related to second house will manifest late in life.

These qualities and attributes of Aries lording the second house may get modified , it planets join or aspect Mars or occupy / aspect the second house.

The next post will describe the effects when Aries lords the third house or bhava.

Nakshatras in Astrology – Characteristics::Effects & Predictions

Nakshatra refers to a group of stars that occupies a particular portion of the sky.Simply put , it is something that resides or is “ashrita” in the Heavens. Nakshatras are usually referred to as the divine mansions and are a total of 28 in number. 27 physical nakashatras and 1 additional nakshatra for other diagnostic purposes , such as use in various dashas and for electional horoscopy. 28 nakshatra scheme also finds its usage in various chakras of vedic astrology.

Mythologically , Daksha Prajapati , the son of the creator Brahma , had 27 daughters which he had married to Chandra Deva or Moon and thus , moon is also known as udunatha or lord of the nakshatras. Every night the moon rides upon his chariot and takes an average of 13 hours to travel through each nakshatra , completing the entire cycle in 28.4 days. This cycle is known as a lunar cycle and is directly related to the high and low tides in the oceans in the physical world. The nakshtras are the wives of the Moon , as just as every being or entity is different , each of these nakshatras have their own characteristics , effects and purposes. The predictions based on nakshatras also differ. Ravana , in his epic text Uddisha Tantra , gave special effects relating to nakshatras and had entire system of prediction based only upon nakshatras.

Each nakshatra has a symbol , a deity and certain characteristics attributed to it. Each nakshatra also has 4 feet or padas and they represent the Dharma , Artha , Kama and Moksha qualities of the nakshatra. The 27 nakshatras are listed below :-

  1. Ashwini
  2. Bharani
  3. Krittika
  4. Rohini
  5. Mrigshira
  6. Ardra
  7. Punarvasu
  8. Pushya
  9. Ashlesha
  10. Magha
  11. Purva Phalguni
  12. Uttar Phalguni
  13. Hasta
  14. Chitra
  15. Swati
  16. Vishakha
  17. Anuradha
  18. Jyestha
  19. Moola
  20. Poorva Shadha
  21. Uttara Shadha
  22. Sravana
  23. Dhanistha
  24. Satabhisha
  25. Poorva Bhadrapada
  26. Uttara Bhadrapada
  27. Revati

Each of these nakshatras will he discussed separately in a separate post , as a fundamental understanding of these nakshatras is very essential in understanding , what karma a particular graha wishes to dispose of , when placed in a certain nakshatra. The nakshatras also form yogas , when they coincide with certain weekdays and tithis . This aspect is very powerful and useful in electional or muhurta astrology. The nakshatras also cruel  and gentle in nature along with being auspicious and inauspicious.

Nakshatras are abodes of divine beings ,where the devatas reside and worshipping the nakshatra devatas has special importance and are very potent in giving results. Each also has a specific mantra and ritual of worship as taught by Lord Brahma. Nakshatras emit divine light and when the grahas in orbit interact with the nakshatras , their nature and results gets modified and as a result , the same planet gives different result for everyone. Since the grahas have no light of their own , but only possess the power to seize or grasp consciousness , they ultimately give the results , but the backstage act is always played by the nakshatras.

Interpreting Divisional Charts / Vargas in Vedic Astrology

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra mentions 16 divisional charts or mathematical products that are derived from the main Rasi or Lagna Chart. The positions of all the planets or grahas including the Ascendant in each of these 16 divisional charts is calculated from the degreecal positions of the Lagna degree rising at the time of birth and through the positions of the various planets. Since the lagna and the planets are always in constant motion , the sub mathematical products or Divisional charts (Vargas) are different for everyone and thus the lives of each of us are different.

These divisional charts help us to understand the various facets of life for a particular native and what karma lies for them to be experienced with regards to different sectors of life. This single aspect of Vedic Astrology makes it different from Western or Other forms of astrology , as they simply do not go into so much depth. The idea is simple and let me try to explain this in layman terms.

Example 1 :-

A person may be good looking , but he may not have money. He may have a good wife , but are unable to have children. He is highly educated , but is unable to find a job . He may be highly spiritual and religious , but his brothers may not be. His father may have a number of vehicles as his command , but he may be travelling by public transportation.

Example 2 :-

A person may be ugly looking , but has millions of dollars in his bank account. He constantly runs after prostitutes and has adopted a child. He is a college dropout , but has a vast business. He is not religious , but he is from a brahmin family. His father may be a postman , but he travles in BMW’s and Mercedes Benz !

So , just by looking at grahas in the Rasi chart , all facets of life cannot be accurately determined and everybody has something given to them easily , whilst something else is always lacking ! The divisional charts (vargas) help the astrologer determine , what will come easily and what will not. The sixteen divisional charts as listed by ancient classical texts are as follows :-

Divisional Chart (Varga) –  Matters to be seen

1. Rasi chart (D-1) –                         Body

2.Hora chart (D-2)-                         Wealth & Finances

3. Drekkana (D-3)-                           Siblings  & Brothers

4.Chaturthamsa (D-4)-                  Fortunes & Residences

5.Saptamsa (D-7)-                           Progency & Children

6.Navamsa (D-9)-                            Marriage , Wife and Relationships

7.Dasamsa (D-10)-                          Work , Career and Profession

8. Dwadashamsa (D-12) –              Parents & Grandparents

9. Shodashamsa (D-16)-                Vehicles & Conveyances

10.Vimsamsa (D-20) –                   Spirituality , Religion and Meditation

11.Siddhamsa (D-24)-                    Learning & Education

12.Nakshatramsa (D-27) –           Inherent Strengths & Weaknesses

13. Trimsamsa (D-30)-                  Evils , Calamities & Character of Person

14.Khavedamsa (D-40)-               Auspicious & Inauspicious Effects

15.Akhavedamsa (D-45)-             Everything

16.Shashtyamsa (D-60)-               Everything

So, the entire gamut of life has been divided in 16 parts by our ancient rishis and evaluation of each of these is necessary to determine the exact root cause of sufferings and blessings. As per Saravali , without the knowledege of divisional charts , one cannot even lay a step forward in determining the fortunes of the native.

We will discuss more on divisional charts in part II.

Aries Ascendant (First House/bhava) – Mesha Rashi in Lagna

Continuing form the previous post in which an introduction was given about the 12 zodiacal signs , Aries (Mesha Rashi) was described. Now we will understand what effects are produced when mesha rasi or Aries occupies the Ascendant or Rising Sign or also known as Lagna in Vedic Astrology.

The Ascendant or First House always denotes and represents the Native or the Self. Houses are also known as Bhavas in jyotisha.Bhava means feeling and in short it represents what kind of feelings the native will have towards a particualr area of life denoted by the particular house of bhava. Self , form , color , internal nature , overall health and vitality, happiness or sadness in life , overall intelligence , head and tendency of the native are to be judged from the Ascendant or the first house.

When Aries or Mesha Rashi occupies the first house/bhava or ascendant , the native will don the qualites of Mars , since Mangal is the ruler of Aries. The native will be short in stature, warrior mentality , either be aggressive or will always revolt against injustice , depending upon the position of Mars in the horoscope. The native will be haste in making decisions , will be lustfully inclined and will also be fond of wars and battles.

Since Aries is a movable sign , the native will always be on the move , fond of travelling and will usually have less hair on his head. Will be hot in constitution and will have keen interest in minerals and metals.

Thus when Aries occupies the Ascendant , it imparts its qualites and thus the native is of an Arian personality. If other grahas join Aries Sign in the ascendant , then depending of which grahas join , the nature of the native is modified so as to asborb qualities of the grahas in the first house.

The next post will describe the effects when Aries lord the second house or bhava.

Aries Zodiac Sign – Mesha Rashi

The entire heavens is a 360 degree circle which has been divided in 12 equal parts. Each of these parts is known as a zodiacal sign and each of them have their own sets of attributes and characteristics. Understanding each of these signs on a more deeper level helps in a better understanding of the horoscope.

The 12 zodiacal signs are :-

1. Aries (Mesha)

2. Tauras (Vrisabha)

3. Gemini (Mithuna)

4. Cancer (Karka)

5. Leo (Simha)

6.Virgo (Kanya)

7.Libra (Tula)

8.Scorpio (Vrischik)

9.Sagittarius (Dhanus)

10.Capricorn (Makar)

11.Aquarius (Kumbha)

12.Pisces (Meena)

The names in brackets are the ones as known in Vedic Astrology and define and represent the signs on a more fundamental and esoteric level. Rashi or Zodiacal sign represents the various part of ‘Kalapurusha’ (Time personified) , Sri Vishnu. The lord himself  has created the signs out of his own very body parts , so as to enable the process of creation and destruction . Aries or Mesha rashi is the first of the tweleve zodiac signs and it represents the following things :-

Body Part – Head

Direction – East

Element – Fire (Agni Tattwa)

Varna (Basic nature) – Kshatriya (Warrior mentality)

Lord – Mars (Mangal)

Locations – Mountains

Symbol – Ram

Exalts – Sun (Surya)

Debilitates – Saturn (Shani)

Mulatrikona – Mars (Mangal)

Type – Dhatu (Metals , Mineral and compounds)

Mode of Rising – Prishtodaya (rising by its back)

Time – Night

Height – Short

Color – Blood Red

Gemstone – Red coral

These indications help in deciphering what the graha or planet does in the horoscope. As rashis or zodiacal signs represents the very base with which when the grahas interact are results produced. Simply looking at planets placed in Aries sign in the horoscope and seeing which house is denoted by aries can give lots of information on how the native interacts with those particular areas of life.

More on the individual houses of the horoscope when ruled by Aries in the following articles.

Effects of Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology – Part II

Continuing from the previous post on Effects of Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology , let us now analyze another horoscope to understand this concept in further detail. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra explains various kinds of dashas , some conditionally applicable , whilst others are universally applicable , but specifically mentions the Vimshottari Dasha to be to most supreme amongst all dasha and of outmost importance in Kali Yuga.

If other dasha systems are applicable and even show the timing of events correctly , then how is one to treat and consider the vimshottari dasha system to the be the most supreme ? Well , each nakshatra dasha uses a different rulership and order of nakshatras for its dasha sequence , but the lords of the vimshottari dasha are universally applicable and must always be considered when evaluating the effects of nakshatra in the horoscope.

Example horoscope 2 :-

Sun –  Rohini
Moon –  Hasta
Mars – Mrigashira
Mercury –  Krittika
Jupiter – Dhanishta
Venus – Aswini
Saturn (R) –  Visakha
Rahu – Bharani
Ketu  – Visakha

Shodasottari dasa (applicable if lagna in Moon’s hora in Krishna paksha or in Sun’s hora in Sukla paksha):

Maha Dasas:

Moon: 1984-08-19 – 2000-08-19
Merc: 2000-08-19 – 2017-08-19
Ven: 2017-08-19 – 2035-08-19
Sun: 2035-08-19 – 2046-08-19
Mars: 2046-08-19 – 2058-08-19
Jup: 2058-08-19 – 2071-08-19
Sat: 2071-08-19 – 2085-08-18
Ket: 2085-08-18 – 2100-08-19

In the above example ,

Moon is placed in own nakshatra and thus gives its effects in complete. Moon is neutral in avashtha and also has full aspect of Jupiter which is neecha or debilitated in the horoscope.Since Moon is placed in 12th house of expenses,  the native is an excessive spend thrift and suffers from serious cold and sinus problems. The nature of the native to spend money is highly malefic and often the native has to go around asking for funds , once he has exhausted his own funds. As the moon is placed in own nakshatra it will give results of own house , which is 10th house in this case , the native puts in lot of hard work and effort , but his efforts are not duly rewarded and appreciated.

Sun is placed in Rohini nakshatra which is lorded by Moon , sun now gives results of 10th house and itself lords 11th house. During Mercury Mahadasha , Sun antardasha , the native for forced to find a job (moon 10th house effect given by sun) in order to earn money (sun lording eleventh house) , due to misunderstanding and problems with his father(sun – natural karaka for father).  The native also got a job north of his place of residence , thus making sun complete his nakshatra effects of Moon in full.(Moon represents North direction)

During Mercury Mahadasha – Jupiter antardasha , Jupiter is placed in Dhanishta Nakshatra which is lorded by Mars and thus jupiter gives effect of 7th house and 2nd house. Jupiter is neecha in the chart , but since it is placed in kendra to lagna , karkamsa lagna and Arudha Lagna , Jupiter has powerful neecha bhanga and gives exalted results. During jupiter dasha , native bought his own house , as Mars disposits 4th Lord Saturn and Jupiter is also receiving full aspect from both Saturn (4th lord) and nakshatra lord (Mars ) making the neecha bhanga even more powerful. The native enjoyed the Jupiter antardasha to the maximum and this period was very auspicious for him. Had jupiter been in some other nakshatra ,the effects would have been completely different. Also note jupiter itself sits in the 4th house of home and lands. The house was bought under a loan from the bank , which further completes the yoga of jupiter in mars nakshatra as mars is karaka for loans and debts.

Thus nakshatra effects are very powerful and must duly be taken into consideration , to underatand what exactly it is that the planet wishes to give in its dasha. Gemstones  can also be prescribed taking this method into consideration and I will discuss this in depth in a future article.

Effect of Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology – Part I

Normally nakshatras are simply referred to as constellations in the sky that are fixed and the various grahas upon their passage through their respective orbits are stationed in various nakshatras , which are recorded at the time of birth of an individual or during horary or other forms of astrology. However , most importance is always given to the nakshtra or constellation occupied by the Moon at the time of consideration , since is it with regards to this very constellation , the conditional nakshatra based dashas are started from. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra mentions various kinds of nakshatra dashas , each with specific conditions which when met are to used specifically for delineating results. Vimshottari , Ashtottari , Yogini and other such nakshatra dashas all are calculated with regards to the specific degree occupied by the Moon in a particular horoscope

But, the nakshatras have many more uses and most often are overlooked by astrologers simply because they do not have the relevant knowledge or technical know-how on how to go about deciphering the effect of nakshatras in the planets are based.Simply put , most astrologers will not even bother looking which nakshtra is the Sun placed in or in which nakshatra is Jupiter placed in. Most of the astrology today is done only on the basis of avasthas of planets and only planets are considered.

However , we must not forget that as Sun overlords the Rasis which exalts or debilitates the grahas , the Moon is also known as Udunatha or Lord of the Constellations and is very important in delineating what actually manifests and provides for a more diverse method of prognostication.

Lets us see some examples and then concept will be all the more clear:-

Example one :-

In the above chart nakshatra positions of various planets are as follows :-

Sun – Swati

Moon – Bharani

Mars – Moola

Mercury – Chitra

Jupiter – Visakha

Venus – Swati

Saturn – Chitra

Rahu – Ardra

Ketu – Poorva Shadha

Now , as per above chart we can see that as rahu is in a kendra to lagna lord Venus , Ashtottari Dasha is applicable. Let us see the dasha sequence below :-

Ashtottari Dasa (controversial nakshatra dasa):

Maha Dasas:

Rah: 1973-02-28 – 1985-02-28
Ven: 1985-02-28 – 2006-02-28
Sun: 2006-02-28 – 2012-02-29
Moon: 2012-02-29 – 2027-02-28
Mars: 2027-02-28 – 2035-02-28
Merc: 2035-02-28 – 2052-02-28
Sat: 2052-02-28 – 2062-02-28
Jup: 2062-02-28 – 2081-02-27

Sun is neecha in Rasi chart and is low in shadbala also. Sun dasha was very adverse for the native. Sun is placed in Swati nakshatra which is lorded by Rahu , thus Sun will specifically give its debilitated results as if Rahu was operating in the chart. Rahu is placed in the 2nd house of wealth and lords Aquarius which is 10th house. During this period , the native suddenly lost his high profile job and most of his savings (bank balance) was wiped out due to false promises by others , which the native blindly accepted and believed. Since Sun is sattwic in nature , the nature sees Sattwic guna in everyone , but since Surya is placed in Rahu Nakshatra , is acts as a negative Rahu and has even given the native smoking addiction (Rahu – Vayu tattwa).

Mercury is placed in Chitra nakshatra which is lorded by Mars and now mercury which is in neutral avastha in the chart and also combust , which give effects of Mars and also the 7th and 12th houses which mars lords. During Mercury antar dasha , the native got married and mainly the marriage was solemnized by relative and was a very quick marriage. Just before marriage , the native suffered an ankle dislocation (Mars in 8th house , lords 12th house) , but this result is being given by mercury since it placed in Mars nakshatra and will thus act as a negative Mars.

Moon is placed in Bharani nakshatra which is lorded by Venus which is placed in mulatrikona in the chart and thus very auspicious.During Moon dasha , person was having a very nice time with lots of finances , no trouble from any enemies and overall prosperity and success. Venus lords Lagna and 6h house. 6th lord in 6th house forms a very auspicous Harsha Yoga and mulatrikona lagna lord is sure to make the person shine. Note that Moon is of Purnimasya tithi , thus full and very auspicious.

So from the above two examples we can see that it is basically the constellations or nakshatras that emit light and the grahas have no light of their own. When grahas cross the nakshatras , their nature gets modified by the nakshatra in which they are placed as they absorb their light and start giving their results. The avashta of the planet simply determines if the graha will act in a negative or positive manner.
