Lord Vishnu himself incarnated as the 9 grahas to bestow the effects to living beings as per their own karma . So , essentially the 9 grahas assume good or bad positions based upon the individual karmas from past life and certain good or bad yogas are formed and when they will be experienced is examined by the dasha system.

Malefic or inauspicious Moon  will make the native volatile and extremely fickle minded , pessimist , lethargic  and prone to blood pressure / blood cancer and other blood related disorders. Migraine , urinary problems, lack of taste and doshas related to kapha or water element are common for those suffering from malefic Moon , especially when it associates with lagna or lagnesha. The benefic aspect of Moon in women , make them extremely loving and caring in nature and Sun being the natural karaka for mother and home and family , a benefic surya makes the person live in royal palaces , having big family and inauspicious moon will make person travel from place to place , create condition for person to be exiled from his motherland and create constant disputes in family.

The sun also adds brillance , self confidence , willpower and determination in the native and makes the person very humble. Aries in Third House::Sahaj Bhava in Vedic Astrology

Continuing form the previous post in which we discussed what effects are produced when Mesha Rasi or Aries occupies the Second House or Dhana Bhava in Vedic Astrology, in this post we will discuss what are the effects when Aries lords the Third house.

The Third House is also known as Sahaj Bhava and  represents siblings, efforts, courage, short journeys, loss of mother, wife’s fortune, elder brother’s children and one’s longevity and vitality. It also represents the throat, neck, arms and right ear from the physical perspective. Houses are also known as Bhavas in jyotisha.Bhava means feeling and in short it represents what kind of feelings the native will have towards a particualr area of life denoted by the particular house of bhava. Since the eight bhava is responsible for the longevity and vitality of the native, the 3rd house being the 8th to the 8th house , also denotes the longevity and thus directly influences the vitality of the native.

When Aries or Mesha Rashi occupies the third house/sahaj bhava , the natives 3rd house affairs will don the qualites of Mars , as Mangal is the ruler of Aries. The native will hot and harsh in temperament , be courageous, fiery and will always undertake short journeys and be on the move. The native’s younger brothers will be be very wealthy or extremely poor depending on the avastha of Mars in the horoscope. The native will not suffer from manglik dosha as Mars is not related to the 7th house of marriage. The native’s wife will find fortune in foreign lands and the brothers will also benefit from east direction. For Aquarius ascendant , Mars is lord of 3rd house and Since lagna lord Saturn does not like Mars , the native will not be particularly affectionate towards his younger siblings.Since the sahaj bhava is also the 6th from the 10th house of profession , the native will have high zeal and will be very proactive in removing obstacles and fighting enemies for advancement in career. The 3rd house is also an upchaya for the 10th house and an auspicious influence on the 3rd house denotes constant improvement in career.

Since Aries is a movable sign , and the 3rd house is the 11th from the 5th house , the native will gain by chanting short and high energy mantras. The updaesha from the guru may be recieved in a foreign land. Since Aries is a prishtodaya rasi , experiences related to third house will manifest late in life.

These qualities and attributes of Aries lording the third house may get modified , it planets join or aspect Mars or occupy / aspect the third house.

The next post will describe the effects when Aries lords the fourth house or bhava.

Aries in Second House::Dhana Bhava in Vedic Astrology

Continuing form the previous post in which we discussed what effects are produced when Mesha Rasi or Aries occupies the Ascendant or Rising Sign or also known as Lagna in Vedic Astrology, in this post we will discuss what are the effects when Aries lords the Second house or Dhana Bhava.

The Second House is also known as Dhava Bhava and  represents finances, bank balances, gold and precious metals, gemstones, family, longevity of wife, speech, food, clothes and death of native. It also represents the face and right eye from the physical perspective. Houses are also known as Bhavas in jyotisha.Bhava means feeling and in short it represents what kind of feelings the native will have towards a particualr area of life denoted by the particular house of bhava. Since the third bhava is responsible for the longevity and vitality of the native, the 2nd house being the 12th to the 3rd house , denotes the loss of longevity and thus directly influences the death of the native.

When Aries or Mesha Rashi occupies the second house/dhana bhava , the natives 2nd house affairs will don the qualites of Mars , as Mangal is the ruler of Aries. The native will like hot and spicy food , be harsh in speech, either be very wealthy or extremely poor depending on the avastha of Mars in the horoscope. The native will also suffer from very mild manglik dosha if mars occupies his own rasi in second house , since 2nd house is eight from 7th house and directly controls the longevity of wife and married life. For Aries ascendant , Mars itself is 8th lord and for Libra Ascendant , Mars is 7th lord of marriage and wife.

Since Aries is a movable sign , the native will be a foodie and preferably fond of cooking himself and will also be a quick eater. The native may get good wealth from east direction as Aries now occupies second house. Since Aries is a prishtodaya rasi , experiences related to second house will manifest late in life.

These qualities and attributes of Aries lording the second house may get modified , it planets join or aspect Mars or occupy / aspect the second house.

The next post will describe the effects when Aries lords the third house or bhava.

Nakshatras in Astrology – Characteristics::Effects & Predictions

Nakshatra refers to a group of stars that occupies a particular portion of the sky.Simply put , it is something that resides or is “ashrita” in the Heavens. Nakshatras are usually referred to as the divine mansions and are a total of 28 in number. 27 physical nakashatras and 1 additional nakshatra for other diagnostic purposes , such as use in various dashas and for electional horoscopy. 28 nakshatra scheme also finds its usage in various chakras of vedic astrology.

Mythologically , Daksha Prajapati , the son of the creator Brahma , had 27 daughters which he had married to Chandra Deva or Moon and thus , moon is also known as udunatha or lord of the nakshatras. Every night the moon rides upon his chariot and takes an average of 13 hours to travel through each nakshatra , completing the entire cycle in 28.4 days. This cycle is known as a lunar cycle and is directly related to the high and low tides in the oceans in the physical world. The nakshtras are the wives of the Moon , as just as every being or entity is different , each of these nakshatras have their own characteristics , effects and purposes. The predictions based on nakshatras also differ. Ravana , in his epic text Uddisha Tantra , gave special effects relating to nakshatras and had entire system of prediction based only upon nakshatras.

Each nakshatra has a symbol , a deity and certain characteristics attributed to it. Each nakshatra also has 4 feet or padas and they represent the Dharma , Artha , Kama and Moksha qualities of the nakshatra. The 27 nakshatras are listed below :-

  1. Ashwini
  2. Bharani
  3. Krittika
  4. Rohini
  5. Mrigshira
  6. Ardra
  7. Punarvasu
  8. Pushya
  9. Ashlesha
  10. Magha
  11. Purva Phalguni
  12. Uttar Phalguni
  13. Hasta
  14. Chitra
  15. Swati
  16. Vishakha
  17. Anuradha
  18. Jyestha
  19. Moola
  20. Poorva Shadha
  21. Uttara Shadha
  22. Sravana
  23. Dhanistha
  24. Satabhisha
  25. Poorva Bhadrapada
  26. Uttara Bhadrapada
  27. Revati

Each of these nakshatras will he discussed separately in a separate post , as a fundamental understanding of these nakshatras is very essential in understanding , what karma a particular graha wishes to dispose of , when placed in a certain nakshatra. The nakshatras also form yogas , when they coincide with certain weekdays and tithis . This aspect is very powerful and useful in electional or muhurta astrology. The nakshatras also cruel  and gentle in nature along with being auspicious and inauspicious.

Nakshatras are abodes of divine beings ,where the devatas reside and worshipping the nakshatra devatas has special importance and are very potent in giving results. Each also has a specific mantra and ritual of worship as taught by Lord Brahma. Nakshatras emit divine light and when the grahas in orbit interact with the nakshatras , their nature and results gets modified and as a result , the same planet gives different result for everyone. Since the grahas have no light of their own , but only possess the power to seize or grasp consciousness , they ultimately give the results , but the backstage act is always played by the nakshatras.

Divisional Charts / Vargas in Vedic Astrology Explained – II

Following up from our previous post on Divisional Charts or Vargas in Vedic Astrology , in this article let us understand how each divisional chart works and how these vargas are supposed to be interpreted with reference to the main rasi chart.

Each bhava / house in vedic  astrology has several parameters attached to it and then it has a particular sign of the zodiac ruling it , along with planets posited in the bhava , planets aspecting it , the bhava lord and planets conjoined the bhava lord. Amongst these factors , even the Arudha of a particular house comes into play and then with the multiple significations and sometimes having multiple karakas for each bhava , it becomes really perplexing as to what will give good result and what will give bad results with respect to a particulcar bhava.

For example , the 4th bhava rules the following :-

Mother ,Home ,Lands ,Hidden Treasures ,Friends / Social Circles ,Vehicles  & Peace of Mind to name a few.

The karakas for 4th house are Jupiter , Moon , Venus and Mercury.

Now in a chart , 4th lord sun is debilitated in 6th house in Rasi Chart. How are we do determine which of the above significations of the 4th house will be auspicious and which all will not be ? Remember in the previous article on Divisonal Charts , I gave 2 examples of people have compeltetly different set of attributes and achievements in life ?

Let us study this in more detail :-

Example Chart :-

In the Rasi chart, which represents the body , matters relating to different organs and body parts must be examined. Here , Sun is the 4th lord that is debilitated in 6th house of diseases. Since ,4th house represents lungs and heart , we can safely say that the native will have troubles relating to lungs , heart and chest area and can have diseases relating to them. Since Sun is karaka for bones , the rib cage area may be most afflicted and overall strength of bones will also be affected.Since Rasi represents only body , no other signification must be decuded from the rasi chart.

The 4th house represents mother and the divisional chart used to view parents overall is the dwadashamsa (D-12). Here 4th lord is mercury , which is placed in inmical avastha in sign of jupiter. The native’s mother has problem of constipation since birth and has also faced a troubled married life , since 4th lord is in 7th house of marriage. Mercury recieves the aspect of varga dispositor Jupiter , so the problem is not so severe . The native’s mother has a huge social circle and is extremely jolly. Since the lagna lord of the varga represents the native himself , the lagnesha and 4th lord are the same i.e. Mercury , the native is extremely attached to his mother.

Another indication of the 4th house is vehicles and the divisional chart that represents vehicles is Shodashamsa (D-16), let us study the 4th house in this varga. Here the 4th lord is Saturn which is neutral in avatha and is placed with own sign Mercury. Saturn recieves aspect from Sun , Venus and Moon. The native learnt driving for the first time in his life after his 24th year under not so favorable circumstances. Moon matures at 24 years and is placed in inmical avashtha. Sun matures at 22 years , but since Sun is debilitated in Rasi chart , it will never give auspicious results in any varga. The native had the pleasure of driving his own vehicle , which was registered in the name of his wife , after 26 years of age , as Venus matured. After 32 years of age , the native will have good vehicles at his command , since mercury is placed in own sign in this divisional chart and is conjunct 4th lord saturn.

So , in short this is how the vargas are to be evaluated and effects for different significations of a particular bhava and karaka must be deduced. If the 4th lord joins a particular planet in a varga that does not signify matters of the 4th house , then the 4th house matters are shared / involved with the particular varga in question. For example , 4th house has nothing to do with wife or Navamsa (D-9). Now , for example if 4th lord of D-12 in  is joined or aspected by 7th lord in D-9, it may be deduced that the wife and mother of the native will share some aspects or significations in life as indicated by signs and sign lords.

As a rule , planets that are weak in shadbala or are debilitated in Rasi chart , should be completely ignored in all vargas as per Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

Interpreting Divisional Charts / Vargas in Vedic Astrology

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra mentions 16 divisional charts or mathematical products that are derived from the main Rasi or Lagna Chart. The positions of all the planets or grahas including the Ascendant in each of these 16 divisional charts is calculated from the degreecal positions of the Lagna degree rising at the time of birth and through the positions of the various planets. Since the lagna and the planets are always in constant motion , the sub mathematical products or Divisional charts (Vargas) are different for everyone and thus the lives of each of us are different.

These divisional charts help us to understand the various facets of life for a particular native and what karma lies for them to be experienced with regards to different sectors of life. This single aspect of Vedic Astrology makes it different from Western or Other forms of astrology , as they simply do not go into so much depth. The idea is simple and let me try to explain this in layman terms.

Example 1 :-

A person may be good looking , but he may not have money. He may have a good wife , but are unable to have children. He is highly educated , but is unable to find a job . He may be highly spiritual and religious , but his brothers may not be. His father may have a number of vehicles as his command , but he may be travelling by public transportation.

Example 2 :-

A person may be ugly looking , but has millions of dollars in his bank account. He constantly runs after prostitutes and has adopted a child. He is a college dropout , but has a vast business. He is not religious , but he is from a brahmin family. His father may be a postman , but he travles in BMW’s and Mercedes Benz !

So , just by looking at grahas in the Rasi chart , all facets of life cannot be accurately determined and everybody has something given to them easily , whilst something else is always lacking ! The divisional charts (vargas) help the astrologer determine , what will come easily and what will not. The sixteen divisional charts as listed by ancient classical texts are as follows :-

Divisional Chart (Varga) –  Matters to be seen

1. Rasi chart (D-1) –                         Body

2.Hora chart (D-2)-                         Wealth & Finances

3. Drekkana (D-3)-                           Siblings  & Brothers

4.Chaturthamsa (D-4)-                  Fortunes & Residences

5.Saptamsa (D-7)-                           Progency & Children

6.Navamsa (D-9)-                            Marriage , Wife and Relationships

7.Dasamsa (D-10)-                          Work , Career and Profession

8. Dwadashamsa (D-12) –              Parents & Grandparents

9. Shodashamsa (D-16)-                Vehicles & Conveyances

10.Vimsamsa (D-20) –                   Spirituality , Religion and Meditation

11.Siddhamsa (D-24)-                    Learning & Education

12.Nakshatramsa (D-27) –           Inherent Strengths & Weaknesses

13. Trimsamsa (D-30)-                  Evils , Calamities & Character of Person

14.Khavedamsa (D-40)-               Auspicious & Inauspicious Effects

15.Akhavedamsa (D-45)-             Everything

16.Shashtyamsa (D-60)-               Everything

So, the entire gamut of life has been divided in 16 parts by our ancient rishis and evaluation of each of these is necessary to determine the exact root cause of sufferings and blessings. As per Saravali , without the knowledege of divisional charts , one cannot even lay a step forward in determining the fortunes of the native.

We will discuss more on divisional charts in part II.

Aries Ascendant (First House/bhava) – Mesha Rashi in Lagna

Continuing form the previous post in which an introduction was given about the 12 zodiacal signs , Aries (Mesha Rashi) was described. Now we will understand what effects are produced when mesha rasi or Aries occupies the Ascendant or Rising Sign or also known as Lagna in Vedic Astrology.

The Ascendant or First House always denotes and represents the Native or the Self. Houses are also known as Bhavas in jyotisha.Bhava means feeling and in short it represents what kind of feelings the native will have towards a particualr area of life denoted by the particular house of bhava. Self , form , color , internal nature , overall health and vitality, happiness or sadness in life , overall intelligence , head and tendency of the native are to be judged from the Ascendant or the first house.

When Aries or Mesha Rashi occupies the first house/bhava or ascendant , the native will don the qualites of Mars , since Mangal is the ruler of Aries. The native will be short in stature, warrior mentality , either be aggressive or will always revolt against injustice , depending upon the position of Mars in the horoscope. The native will be haste in making decisions , will be lustfully inclined and will also be fond of wars and battles.

Since Aries is a movable sign , the native will always be on the move , fond of travelling and will usually have less hair on his head. Will be hot in constitution and will have keen interest in minerals and metals.

Thus when Aries occupies the Ascendant , it imparts its qualites and thus the native is of an Arian personality. If other grahas join Aries Sign in the ascendant , then depending of which grahas join , the nature of the native is modified so as to asborb qualities of the grahas in the first house.

The next post will describe the effects when Aries lord the second house or bhava.
