Ruby is the gemstone of the Sun or Surya Graha as known in Vedic Literature. Ruby comes from the family of mineral known as Corundum and has hardness of 9 on the Mohr’s Scale. It has a Specific Gravity of 4.03 and is dichromatic.Ruby is known as Padmaraga or one possessing the color of the lotus in Sanskrit , Manik or Manikya in Hindi , Yakut in Persian , Chunnu in Urdu and Ruby in English. Ruby is also known as Ratna – Raja or the King of Gemstones , as it represents Surya who himself is Grahapati or the leader of all the 9 grahas.

Ruby mineral is essentially a compound of Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) with traces of chromium which impart it the red color. Rubies are available in different shades from pinkish red to deep red , purplish red and dirty red. These colors also correspond to the four varnas or types of rubies that are available.

Brahmin Varna – Rubies that are pink or rosy in color belong to the Brahmin Varna and these are the ones that are truly known as Padmaraga or lotus colored in Sanskrit , since they resemble the color of the lotus flower. These rubies are suitable to be worn by those who are engaged in teaching , consultations and other spiritual practices. Wearing such pink colored rubies makes the person very peaceful in nature and gives spiritual inclinations.

Kshatriya Varna – Rubies that are dark deep red in color similar to the color of the  blood are known as Kshatriya rubies. Shudra Varna –  Rubies that are purplish red or dirty red in color with no radiance or luster are known as shudra varna and these rubies are the cheapest amongst all the rubies. Such rubies are worn by those who are engaged in some kind of service or to people who offer their services and talents on a professional basis. These rubies must be worn by musicians  & artists. Wearing such rubies is very helpful for those who seek employment and require stability in life.

Ruby gemstones should be free from blemishes such as dark spots , webs , sandy appearance , lack of luster and must not have extremities of color. Such rubies fail to effectively transmit the cosmic radiation of the Sun and bring about undesirable results. Rubies should be free from any defects and must have uniform color , good lustre , acceptable transparency and must be appealing to the eye. A minimum of 1 carat is enough to be worn as per astrological reasons and the gemstone must be set preferably in gold or copper.A gemstone of 2-3 carats is good and a Ruby of 5-7 carats is most advisable and sought after.
